False Confession to Suicide Refuted with Forensic Evidence

Summary:

It is clear from the photograph depicting the thumb (right) that subsequent
movement of the body could have easily knocked the safety button on with
a slight upward movement of the stiffened thumb.

After a US Marine sergeant was found dead in his barrack of a single gunshot to the head, his best friend confessed to murdering him. Initially, suicide was suspected until a pistol in the grip of the victim was found to have its safety in the safe position. This fact, combined with confessions made on two separate occasions by the defendant, a Corporal in the Marines, led the Government to press murder charges against him.
