Improperly Secured Skiff Shifts and Causes Hand Injury to Fisherman

Summary:

As plaintiff created more slack in the winch cable before unhooking the
bridle chains, his right hand came very close to the block.

Plaintiff fisherman was standing on top of a fishing boat net spool reining in a winch cable prior to unhooking the bridle chain of a skiff at which time an improperly secured skiff suddenly shifted position. When the skiff suddenly jerked downward, the fisherman’s right hand was drawn into the block, resulting in a severe hand injury. A “let it go cable” should have properly secured the skiff, but the boat operator failed to rig it properly.
