Respondent scientific instrument maker was accused of infringing plaintiff’s patent for an ion trap mass spectrometer, for which the underlying technological principles at issue were extremely difficult to explain. At issue was how the accused device selectively ejected ions for particular substances by correlating specific voltage, frequency, and modulation combinations to different kinds of ions. Therefore, by “dialing in” the correct combination, the spectrometer would eject a desired ion if it was present in the tested sample.
