Workaround Proven to be Window Dressing for Patent Infringement

Summary:

Block and circuit diagrams lie at the heart of most electronic technology
patent cases. There are several different options to bring these to life
including, in this case, 2D animation. Both animations featured in this
case combined an animated diagram with a voltage graph.

After the defendant failed to reach a purchase agreement with the plaintiff, it designed its own chip in response. However, the plaintiff was able to prove that apart from a non-functional difference in wiring, the two technologies were virtually the same and was awarded compensatory damages along with a finding of willfulness. A federal court jury found the defendant liable for infringing two patents owned by the plaintiff pertaining to high-voltage integrated circuits designed to control the power supply for mobile devices like cell phones.
