Improper Soils Treatment Led to Massive Damage to Desert Subdivision

Summary:

Frames from a 2D-animation illustrated how groundwater leached salt
out of the soil and up into the foundation of the homes, corroding the
concrete slabs.

Widespread corrosion of concrete slabs and metal door frames was experienced in a residential subdivision located in the California desert. The cause was attributed to abnormally high salt content of the soil, which had not been leached or replaced after decades of use as a livestock feedlot. Because the owner of the feedlot and the developer of the housing tract were one in the same, liability was easier to establish. Explaining the mechanism of corrosion, however, was more difficult, but was accomplished with a series of creative demonstrative exhibits.
