On March 30, 1968, Captain Kenneth W. Pipes, USMC (Ret.), led a company of men at the Khe Sanh Combat Base in South Vietnam on a valiant effort to recover the bodies of fallen comrades outside the perimeter of the base in hostile territory. During a running battle with the enemy, Captain Pipes performed multiple heroic acts ranging from personally leading his men while almost mortally wounded, engaging the enemy in close-quarters combat on more than one occasion, covering a wounded marine with his own flak jacket while under fire, and continuously directing accurate cover fire to extricate his company before and after completing his recovery mission. Captain Pipes was awarded the Silver Star for his valor.
